Broken Beach is one of the most famous sightseeing stops on Nusa Penida island in Bali.
This is an amazing horseshoe-shaped circular cove formed in the rocks, complete with a leftover arch and perfectly blue water. It’s easy to visit, with only a short walk required.
Make sure Broken Bay is on your itinerary, because it’s one of the most unique beaches you’ll ever see!

Broken Beach Nusa Penida: What To Expect
Broken Beach is a circular hollow bay in the cliff rocks, apparently carved by the waves over many, many years.
The bottom is filled with turquoise water from the waves coming in, and there’s even a small white sand beach. You can’t actually go down to the beach, just admire from above, but what a cool view it is!
There’s a few old local legends associated with this place that say it was created either by a giant’s footsteps or by an angry sorcerer.
It’s definitely a very unique kind of formation that I haven’t seen anywhere else in my world travels, although I know there’s a similar bay (called ‘Hidden Beach’) on Isla Marietas in Mexico, and another place with some similarities (at least if you look at it from above) is the Benagil cave in Algarve, Portugal.
Walking in a circle around Broken Beach, you can get more views of the rocky coast and the boats bringing people out for snorkeling tours.
If you have a drone this is a great spot to fly, with lots of wide open space and amazing views of the coastline and horseshoe-shaped bay from above.
This area is also one of the popular hangout spots for manta rays, so you’ll most likely get to see some rays floating around in the sea nearby.

There’s no entry fee or parking fee at Broken Beach Nusa Penida.
How To Get To Broken Beach
Broken Bay is on the west side of Nusa Penida island, near Bali.
It’s accessible by car or scooter, about 45-60 minutes’ drive from the main docks and accommodation in northern Penida.
Be careful if you go by scooter because this is one of the roughest roads in Penida, and may be dangerous in some spots if you don’t take it slow!

Where We Stayed
We stayed at Saren Villa on the north coast of Nusa Penida, and paid 240k Rupiah ($15 USD) for a private double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.
This is one of the cheapest options in Penida, and it’s in a great location near the best restaurants! We were happy.
Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.
