Pianemo Island Viewpoint: Ultimate Guide
Pianemo Island is one of the most epic spots in Indonesia and the world. In fact, I had been waiting over two years to tick this spot off my bucket list. Raja Ampat is quite isolated so it is important to know the logistics and tips before you go. You’ll most likely visit this region on a Raja Ampat Liveaboard experience, which I highly recommend.

My experience visiting Piaynemo Island
When we first arrived at the Pianemo Island area, which is actually lots of small islands in one concentrated area, I was speechless. Our boat suddenly became surrounded by small islets as we cruised through the crystal clear water toward the dock. I couldn’t believe I was finally in my bucket list destination on a day with perfect weather.
Our boat docked and I headed straight to the stairs. There was only one other family in the whole area. It wasn’t like Thailand where beautiful sites are often incredibly crowded. The rest of my group unpacked and waited at the dock but I was already running up the stairs. I was too excited to wait.
The climb up is only a 5-10 minute stair climb and easy enough for small kids and the elderly to go slowly. Once I reached the top I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face. The view is out of this world. It seems like something from a movie. I’ll let the pictures from my camera and drone do the explaining.
Where is Pianemo Island?
Pianemo Island is in Raja Ampat on Pulau Wajag. Raja Ampat is two flights away from Bali and then a couple of boat trips on top of that depending on where you stay. It is quite an isolated area and quite hard to get to, which makes it a great place to explore once you are actually there because it is far less crowded than other similar spots around Asia.
I wrote a guide for visiting Raja Ampat, which includes the best dive sites, things to do, and whether or not you should go on a liveaboard or stay in a dive resort.
How to get to Pianemo Island
It took us three flights from Bali! Although one flight was only 15 minutes! We flew from Bali to Makassar and then flew to Makassar to Sorong and then finally to Raja Ampat (You can do the last flight with a two-hour ferry instead). We then stayed at Raja Ampat Dive Resort, which was still about 1.5 hours from Pianemo Island so our dive boat took us during our surface interval on a day of diving.
There are a number of Raja Ampat Diving Liveaboards in the area that includes a visit to Piaynemo Island on the itinerary as well as lots of awesome scuba dives. Wherever you are in Raja Ampat do your best to find a way to visit Pianemo Island because it was unbelievable!
Can you swim at Pianemo Island?
The water at Pianemo Island was crystal clear and has an amazing turquoise color, which reminded me of Kawasan Falls in the Philippines. You can swim at the bottom in the calm water and explore the islands. When I was flying the drone I found a few cool spots with a pier and hidden beaches. We also did some small cliff jumping from one of the islets in the middle of the lagoon.
