Devil’s Tears is an iconic natural attraction situated on Nusa Lembongan, one of the three Nusa Islands off the southeast coast of Bali, Indonesia. The spot gets its intriguing name from the spray of water that splashes up like ‘tears’ when waves crash against the rocky coastline and flow back into the sea through a naturally-formed arch. How to get to the Nusa Islands
There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:
- Book your ticket: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go. You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
- Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook.
- Book a fast boat with hotel-pick up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.
Devil’s Tears Nusa Lembongan Location
It takes less than 10 minutes to drive from the main strip in Nusa Lembongan to Devil’s Tears. The best way to get around the island is by moped/scooter. You can hire one for about $5 US dollars per day and gas is just over $1 per bottle.

Why is it called Devil’s Tears?
What makes Devil’s Tears such an epic spot is in the name. Waves come crashing into the cove and like a blowhole, come spitting out with such force they blow a mist or ‘tears’ up into the air. That’s my interpretation of the name anyhow and it seems to be reflected in other articles online.
Visiting Devil’s Tears on Nusa Lembongan
When you arrive at Devil’s Tears you might be a bit alarmed at the number of tourists at this site. It seems to be a popular attraction for tour companies on multi-stop tours. However, once you clear the initial section most of the tourists don’t venture down the coast to the tide pools and you can leave the busloads of tourists in your dust.
The beauty of this area is that you can kind of just explore at will and find a spot to watch the sunset. I sat and watched the waves come crashing in and blowing up the mist for a while. The ferocity of the flow didn’t seem to bother a lone turtle who came into the cove to cruise around. Make sure you wear shoes as the rock is very sharp and jagged the further you explore down the cliffs.

After a little bit of a chill, we headed away from the parking lot down the coast. Here we reached the spot I call, the Devi’s Tear’s sunset spot!
The reason this is such a good sunset spot is that it faces directly out over the ocean at the sun as it sets over the horizon. In addition there are lots of little coves and corners in this area for little adventures and exploring. As the sun begins to set the tide-pools turn into reflection pools and the scene becomes nothing short of amazing, which is why I throw around the term, ‘Best sunset in Bali’.
Both times I have been to Devil’s Tears, the sunset has been incredible with epic reflections in all of the pools.

Devil’s Tears cliff jumping
Devil’s Tears is a popular sunset spot and tourist spot in general on Nusa Lembongan. We always hang out here for sunset as the tide pools have insane reflections. However, the last time we hit Devil’s Tears the swell wasn’t too crazy and we sent a few jumps. It’s only about 3-4 meters where we jumped but a ton of fun.
The waves here smash into the cliffs so don’t mess around here on a day of a big swell. There is also an epic little cliff jump spot at Dream Beach around the corner.
